Frequently Asked Questions
A railrider is a pedal-powered vehicle that rides on railroad tracks. Each railrider has four seats, pedals for each seat, brakes, and seat belts. Because it rides on rails, there’s no steering needed—so it’s more “hands-free” than a typical bike ride.
Riders of all ages can participate, as long as they’re comfortable doing moderate exercise and staying seated/buckled in. Riders should know their health limits—especially with pre-existing conditions, recent surgery, injuries, or limited mobility—and avoid riding if it could aggravate a condition. Single riders must be 18+ years old.
Your safety is our priority. We want you to have fun, but we also want to make sure your rail bike adventure is without incident. Know your health limits: pre-existing health conditions; recent surgery, injuries or conditions that resulted in limited mobility. Do not ride a rail bike if it could aggravate an existing health condition. If you are severely allergic to bee stings or other allergens that may cause other respiratory concerns, please bring your EpiPen and/or appropriate medications. Our staff carries first aid supplies, radios and phones with capability to notify 911.
Pedaling to Box Canyon Dam requires effort. It is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace to give you a chance to take in your surroundings. These trips feature a mixed gradient of about 1 1/2% through Box Canyon at time can be strenuous. Rail Riding is a PHYSICAL SPORT, and guests are EXPECTED to pedal unless you have prior arrangements with your group members. Riders should be capable of bicycling recumbently for 30-60 minutes.
Tickets are not per person—they’re priced per quad railrider that seats up to four people. There’s no discount for empty seats, and each rider must be in their own seat. Lap riding is not allowed.
Yes—kids can come along, and there’s no minimum age limit. Infants can ride in a front-style chest harness with an adult (and infants 1 year and under ride free), but chest harnesses are not provided. Car seats are allowed and secured to railrider seats with a single lap style seatbelt. Lap riding is not allowed as it is unsafe. Children must be accompanied by a rider at least 16 years of age.
Younger children may not be able to reach the pedals but can be safely buckled in to enjoy the ride. All riders must be in their own seat and wear seatbelts.
There is a 250 lb weight limit per rider per seat.
Bring water, sunscreen, and weather-appropriate outerwear (like hats, windbreakers, or rain gear), plus a camera if you want photos/video. Storage is limited—small bags like fanny packs can fit behind the seats, but bulky items like backpacks, large purses/totes, and ice chests aren’t allowed. Closed-toe shoes are recommended.
Do not bring your pets, any drugs, or glass containers. No alcohol, smoking, or vaping is allowed
Tours run rain or shine and will go ahead in light rain/showers, so riders should dress for the forecast. If NPOV Lions Railriders cancels due to dangerous weather conditions, riders receive a full refund. Rescheduling/cancellation due to weather only happens if it’s considered unsafe to be on the rails. Customers who cancel due to weather are subject to our cancellation policy.
Restrooms are available at the Lions Depot and it’s recommended to use them before departing. Restrooms are not available at the Box Canyon Dam viewing area.
Booking ahead is strongly recommended because tours can sell out quickly, especially with limited seats available. Seats aren’t held for walk-ins, and riders should arrive 30 minutes before departure for check-in, safety orientation, and seat adjustments.
Special Group rides: Ask about a “Special Group” ride. This is a fun way to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, reunions.
Plan on 2 hours. The total ride is 6 miles round trip and about 1 ½ hrs.
All the railriders (11 quad railriders) leave at the same time, with NPOV Lions member tour guides and Safety Crew, pedaling north along the Pend Oreille River to Box Canyon Dam. There will be a small break (10-15 min) for Lion hosts to turnaround all the railriders while riders rest, stretch your legs and take in the view. The tour group pedals south and returns to the Lion Depot. The group will spread out along the track so that there is up to 30ft between you and the riders ahead and behind. This allows each group to enjoy the freedom of the outdoors and the magic of the railroad at their own pace.
Passing is not possible - the goal is to enjoy the journey, not to go as fast as you can. A slower rider in front means you will have more time to relax and enjoy the ride. Give other riders space - PLEASE DON'T TAILGATE!!!
You may cancel your reservation at any time up to 72 hours prior to scheduled departure. (lionsrailriders@gmail.com or 844-724-5743 (M-F 9am-5pm). No-shows will be charged the full price. There will be no refunds or rescheduling for late arrivals or missed trips.
We run rain or shine, unless dangerous weather conditions are occurring or imminent, based on the judgment of NPOV Lions Railriders. If NPOV Lions Railriders cancel a tour
because of dangerous weather conditions, riders will receive full refunds. Whenever possible, we try to wait out any questionable weather.
